Keystone Rescue Services is established as a Nonprofit Corporation in Newberg, Oregon with the expectation of rapid expansion in the animal welfare industry. The founders of the organization, after years of working in animal rescue, recognized a need within the industry and formed Keystone Rescue Services to fulfill that need. Keystone Rescue Services (dba The CRUX) will fulfill this need by operating a clinic focused on providing pre-adoption medical services for the local animal rescue community, with a secondary focus on assisting low-income community members in order to reduce the demand placed on the animal rescue community and private veterinarians.
Business Description
Keystone Rescue Services is a Nonprofit Corporation under Oregon State laws and founded by Sarah Hecht, Karah Hubbell, and Ryan Simmons.
The Founders have a combined 20 years of experience in the animal rescue, nonprofit industry and have first-hand experience in the hardships faced by Animal Rescue Entities when seeking access to spay/neuter and medical care to prepare homeless animals for adoption.
Due to the shortage of access to veterinary surgical appointments, the community is also facing greater wait times when seeking spay/neuter services. Additionally, the local community has an 11.9% poverty rate (DATAUSA, 2020), and low-income households cannot often afford spay/neuter services at private
veterinary facilities. This has contributed to an overpopulation of homeless pets. Keystone Rescue Services (dba The CRUX) will be offering low-cost services to low-income community members.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, overpopulation was already a problem that the animal welfare community had been struggling to manage. With the restrictions on medical supplies and surgeries, staff shortages, and increased cost of services during the pandemic, the community faced a large increase in unwanted litters. This has set the animal welfare community back decades in our efforts to manage the overpopulation of homeless pets.
Business Goals
Years 1-2: Fundraising
Keystone Rescue Services intends on seeking funding via fundraisers, grants, donations, private financing, and/or forgivable loans to open our clinic, The CRUX.
Year 3: Sustainable Operations
Once The CRUX has been open for one year, we expect to have established relationships with rescues, worked on fine-tuning our operational processes, and be financially sustainable.
Year 4: Continuation of Established Operations
We will utilize this second year of operations at The CRUX to build capital toward the purchase of a facility and to expand staffing in order to increase our capacity and impact.
Year 5: Purchase Facility and Expand Staffing
With two years of operations under our belt at The CRUX and a financially sustainable organization, we will reinvest our capital into the purchase of a facility and to expand our staffing to add a second surgical team and additional administrative staffing, thereby increasing our capacity and offerings.
